Paris 2024 Olympics: Team USA leads qualifying race despite Simone Biles injury

Prize table | Olympic Schedule | Olympic News

The 2024 Paris Olympics have begun, and the USA Women’s Gymnastics team begins qualifying on Sunday at the Bercy Arena. Simone Biles, Jade Carey, Jordan Chiles, Sunisa Lee and Hezly Rivera are looking to return to the top in Paris after winning the team silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Games.

The quintet started well, but not without stumbling. Most notably, Biles sprained her left leg while warming up for her floor exercise during Team USA’s second round.

Biles was heard saying it hurt to push off the court at times, but stayed in the tournament, with a heavily sprained ankle. He had a big mistake on his floor routine and needed a big step back to double pike Yurchenko in the upper room, but he came out and led the rounds.

Meanwhile, Lee narrowly defeated Chiles for second place in the American individual all-around and will get a chance to defend his gold medal in Tokyo. The worst day was that of Carey, who had a bad fall and was unable to get a chance to defend his gold in the discipline.

The Americans were in the second half of the day. Here is the full list of gymnastics:

Live29 updates

  • Team USA holds a huge lead after two divisions

Team USA didn’t have a clean qualifying run, between Simone Biles’ injury and Jade Carey’s fall, but they hold a huge lead with 172.296 in the team standings after two rounds. Currently in second place is China with 166.861.

Meanwhile, the top individual board around:

    1. Simone Biles, 59.566
    2. Sunisa Lee, 56.132
    3. Jordan Chiles, 56.065 (eliminated)
    4. Kaylia Nemour from Algeria, 55.966

Three more episodes to go. We will come back when the field is full.

  • Suni Lee defeats Jordan Chiles for the quarterfinals

Being a Team USA gymnast means you can be the third best in the world, but be outdone by your teammates. Suni Lee beats Chiles with 14.866 points and will get a chance to defend her gold medal.

Meanwhile, Simone Biles is spraining her ankle after a hard day’s work.

  • Simone Biles completes a strong graduation season

The bars may have been Biles’ worst event, but she looked good there, knocking hard and scoring a 14.433. He was all smiles when he hit the mat … then he went the wrong way. You should lead all the way around when all the divisions are finished.

Now, Suni Lee is competing for her place in the ring.

  • Here’s Biles’ first spot, with Lindsey Vonn

  • Jordan Chiles makes a strong all-around showing with a 14.266 on bars

Suni Lee will need to be perfect here to have a chance to defend her gold all around Tokyo.

  • Hezly Rivera starts Team USA starting on the uneven bars

The 16-year-old rookie is off to a strong start for Team USA with a 13.900. Good: NBC showed a heart monitor for her father Henry, who sat at about 180 BPM

  • The biggest drama left: the battle for second place in the US all around

Only two gymnasts from each country are allowed to qualify for the finals. Bills will almost certainly take the first place in the US. The second will come down to Jordan Chiles vs. Suni Lee.

Chiles sits at 41.799 to Lee’s 41.266, but Lee could hold an advantage on bars, where she won bronze in Tokyo.

  • Biles takes down her second room, then steps off the stage on one leg

Biles is clearly another pain. He jumped off the stage with one foot and seemed to limp as he walked around the arena, but the locker rooms are very important. She scores a 14.800, working her way up to a 15.300 overall score, and sits well heading into Team USA’s final, the uneven bars.

  • Biles scores a 15.800 in her first vault

About two points higher than the rest. That. Will. Play

  • Simones Biles puts Yurchenko on the pike twice

NBC’s Laurie Hernandez: “I feel like I’m going to throw up”

Biles: doing the hardest trick in gymnastics with a sprained ankle, and a big step back.

    Hernandez: “That’s right.”

  • Jade Carey recovers from a disaster on the floor with two large bedrooms, Simone Biles upstairs

Carey shakes off her poor fall routine with a 14.433 on vault. He will reach the finals with a lot of points and his mother will tear up the crowd.

    Next up: Simone Biles.

  • Suni Lee and Jordan Chiles remain solid in the vault

Lee scores 14.133 while Chiles has 14.21. Two big points. Next, Jade Carey.

  • This is part of Biles’ floor routine, which leaves her in a bad spot

  • Team USA is in storage now

With the ankle confirmed, it’s now time for Biles’ signature event: the vault. He will be doing two vaults, so we will see if the injury affects him.

  • The bile looks good

Except for her left leg coming off the edge of her first fall, Biles came up big. Either that ankle injury wasn’t a surprise, or we saw some strange injuries. He could be heard saying “I was looking at the process like ‘what the f*** was that.'”

She gets a 14.600, again the best of the day, and all is well for now except Carey can’t defend her gold medal.

  • Simone Biles is competing on the floor now

With a heavily sprained left ankle, Simone Biles comes down. Carey earned a score of 10.633.

  • Jade Carey stumbles badly on the floor, Biles comes back

Jade Carey is the star of the floor for Team USA, but she just set a bad trend for a very bad fall, once the attitude started to change because of Biles’ instability. Carey is now out of the running for the finals, with Biles back in contention.

  • Simone Biles has left the arena

The greatest possible development. Biles walks off the field with a possible left leg injury, while gold medalist Jade Carey sits down. Bills will appear in the future.

  • Trainers are currently working on Biles’ left ankle

Bile was heard telling the trainers that it hurt to push on his left ankle. They are still tapping it.

Suni Lee gets a 13.100 on floor, with Jordan Chiles next. It’s one more gymnast before Biles has to take the floor.

  • Simone Biles complains about possible injury

Immediately after giving the pitch, Biles warms up on the floor and seems to change something. He could be heard telling the trainers that he felt something while he was warming up. We’ll see where this goes.

Meanwhile, Suni Lee takes first place for Team USA’s first schedule of the second round.
